No, no mention of Virtual Hydlide yet. Personally I quite liked Virtual Hydlide. The Saturn's only open world game, to the best of my knowledge. Not one of the system's more polished RPGs, but it has its own unique gameplay style, and the dungeon and overworld designs feel very organic. I tried it once but the framerate and animations put me off. Was it part of a series? I seem to remember there being a 16bit version. I think ill dust off my Saturn copy and give it a second chance.

Yeah, it was a trilogy of games for Japanese PCs. The first game has the distinction of being one of the first Japanese RPGs and got a port to the NES which was localized to North America; the other two have never been released outside Japan. Virtual Hydlide is a remake of Hydlide I. There was also a remake of Hydlide III, called Super Hydlide, for the Genesis.

Wow, this is tough for me, I usually avoid games that get negative reviews. The shittiest Saturn game I think I played was alone in the dark 2. That was a BAD experience. I think I played Criticom once, that was pretty awful. Black Fire was lousy also, I think I gave that to goodwill. Revolution X was horrible on the Saturn, that arcade game never did have a good home port AFAIK.

Great clue, City of Angels is a terrible game mind you I have heard that the Japanese Crow Battle Action for Sega Saturn isn't that great a game either, despite it being very pricey these days. Oh and has anyone mentioned Virtual Hydlide yet, mate just finished another video, shocking RPG. I played Virtual Hydlide for about 30 mins once. I really have to sit through the game and try and make heads or tails of it because for the 30 minutes, I just wondered around aimlessly and then found a torn down castle. I walked in, killed one or two things and then died shortly after. As someone who loves fighting games, I hated Criticom. My review of it was kind of shitty so it's fitting. Never played Alone in the Dark 2 - what makes it bad? I own it. I just haven't had the time to play it. Neither Black Fire but I have seen youtube vids. And I reviewed Revolution X on the Saturn and thought it was pretty dog shit back in the day and then RE-REVIEWED it last year and it still sucks. I played a bunch of Saturn games in that time and I would argue that if it supported the light gun it would be far better than it is.

You do have to put a lot of things into context when you're looking back from 2015.
Alone in the Dark 2 for example was a port over from the PC and they retained its very distinctive graphical style, which of course by the time it hit the Saturn looked very dated, but man those games blew my mind on the PC 4 years earlier.

Totally agree, I still enjoyed the Saturn port of AITD2 but it just wasn't the best port going. One I think few people talk about is Mortal Kombat II, which I just been watching how bad it was, my mate did a DOOM video too but I don't think we need to discuss that.

Im a huge MK fan and own MK2 on Saturn. Was playing it just a few nights ago actually. To have it even mentioned in here is a bit ridiculous IMO. I watched that guys entire video and really, most of it was just him having a whinge about things which really are not a big deal. A – First 5 mins was him complaining about a small part of the intro not being there compared to the arcade version. Who cares? Lets be honest, you would watch that intro ONCE and then every other time press start to skip it. B – Next 10 mins was him complaining about Shang Tsung morph load time. Was is bad? Yes, it was. But just turn his ability to morph off in the options and just fight against Shang himself. Once again, to me, not a big deal. C – Next few minutes complained about about Shao Kahn not saying “Flawless Victory” Would it be nice if he said it? Ok, fine. But once again, nothing I would feel I need to make a youtube video and complain about. D – Next few minutes was him complaining that the options didnt save. Really? So you have to change the skill level each time you turn it on? Again, who cares.
To me, his really just complaining about tiny things that really are not that important. If youre going to complain about things like that, you could essentially pick apart any game.
The ONE thing I will agree on, is the first time you do a special move, the game will have a slight pause which is anoying. So yes, I do agree on that. That ONLY occurs the 1st time you perform the move, after that, the game plays quite smooth. Overall, I enjoy the game and believe me, there is ALOT worse games going around on the Saturn then this.

I think he also makes the game look a lot worse then it is as he continually shows the slow down over and over and over. If you haven't played the game you would get the impression the slow down is through out the entire game. It's just not the case. There IS slowdown when you fight Shang Tsung if you have morphing on. And there is slowdown when you perform your first special move. But after that initial special move the game runs fine. maybe watch this video m.youtube.com/watch?v=liKq2LhREXYYou will see when he performs a special there is an initial slight delay and then the game runs fine.

Im a big MK fan too. I thought MK2 was interesting in that the Saturn got a version. Wasnt great but passable. MK Trilogy wasn't polished like most of the late releases. But the Saturn got Ultimate MK3 over PSX and luckily that was the best of the 3. So as a Saturn MKer we actually got the best version of the best of the early MK titles.

I stay far away from any and all licensed games, unless they have good reviews and come highly recommended. I consider that standard fare, but I suppose many wouldn't know that the game was made to cash in, from a well received movie (that was based on a well received comic book). I'm sure Crow fans are still crying themselves to sleep. This thread is made for me. I was the kid who found odd/niche things to enjoy about games that other people bashed. I used to read most of the bad game reviews for Saturn back in the day and almost become more intrigued to play them. For example Congo and The Crow were 2 games I reallly wanted to play back in 96-97 but I was young, no money, no internet. Not like Ebay today. So those were 2 of the first games I bought in 2003-2004 when I finally had access to buying retro games. Congo Ive talked about alot and dont want to go into it. I like it a fair amount. Its a sprite based FPS in the jungle. Kinda hits most of my interests from back then. THE CROW just had an awesome look to it. I used to look at the pictures in Gamepro magazine admiring the atmosphere and the 3D polygons. I basically drooled over any Saturn game that showed of 3D/polygons. The pictures of Burning Rangers of the large polygon boss battles from Gamepro back in 98 stuck with me for 10 years before I finally bought a copy. Then there is Contra Legacy of War which most people hate... I actually loved it. People hate Sonic R, one of my favorite Saturn Games. Although R has more of a weird reputation because of the soundtrack than anything else. Sonic 3D Blast is another one. Although people dont really hate this, its more of being letdown that nothing came after it. Its an average game, enjoyable on a quick play through but happens to have the bonus of the best soundtrack on the Saturn (imo). So as you can see games to avoid generally have some value in my eyes. Im always a glass half full guy to begin with Also licensed games for some reason had an effect on me. Some of the games I wanted the most that I never owned when they were originally released were Casper, Congo, Crow, Independence Day, Jurassic Park Lost World. I was a big into film back then and love most of those movies as well. Jurassic Park (being in my top 5 movies all time) was a must own. As someone mentioned before, the game can be enjoyed. Its cool to play as the dinos etc. However even Im not a big fan of the game. The controls are too poor. If they had made it a bit more functional it could have been something. I loved the polygon dinos though. This is coming from a guy who usually defends most JP games (Tresspasser for PC is in my top 20 games all time) I guess I cant actually recommend a game to avoid. Although alot of the games I rented/hired from Blockbuster when I was kid always seem to be bad. Shellshock and Black Fire come to mind but you have to remember I didnt like those style of games. I see Black Fire mentioned elsewhere in this thread but the truth is both that and Shellshock received very high ratings in Gamepro and Gamefan etc. So at the time for people into that genre, it could be enjoyed. Robotica was another one. Im a huge FPS guy but I cant recommend it. Its fun to play in 10 minute max bursts for the music. Sadly Saturn Doom might be the main one to avoid which is shitty because Doom one of my Top 5 favorite games of all time and the Saturn is my favorite system. How could it go wrong? Its not Dooms fault and its not the Saturns fault. Its Rage softwares fault. I hope they are all unemployed right now (ok thats not fair)

I don't think its weak frame rate is enough to warrant an avoid. Some of the most loved Saturn games come with their own problems like the glitchyness in Burning Rangers, the low res of FIghters Megamix, the terrible draw distance in the original Daytona, the severe slowdown in Guardian Heroes. If those games are celebrated with their impediments, why can't House of the Dead be as well? I actually never thought of this perspective but I agree that House of the Dead belongs nowhere in this thread. Im generally a glass half full guy (or should I say 60% full harharhar) so Im the same way with House of the Dead. In the mid 90's my favorite arcade game was Area 51 which was my first Saturn purchase as well, good port. But soon after HOTD came out with its polygons and zombies. I still consider these 2 games my 2 favorite light gunners of all time. Only console you can find both of them on is the Saturn. We all know the story of House of the Dead being a 60% complete port but even at that its 100% playable from start to finish. I feel the game plays smoothly enough, functions just fine, and has all the gameplay intact. It really just lacks the graphical polish (and a couple more coats of paint on top of that). Had the game been release with lots of bugs and unplayable slowdown, it would be a different story (see Saturn Doom!). I think I actually look at HOTD as some sort of miracle. These guys were able to get the game at least playable for release in such a short time. I also look at it this way. I think we were lucky to get a release at all. Sega was on the chopping block at that point of most new releases. Im wondering had they came to Tantalus and saw the game was 40% with a nonplayable version would they have just cancelled the game completely? So with that being said Im glad it exists and I consider it in my Top 20 Saturn games list for many reasons. The gameplay is there, its already one of my top arcade games of all time and you cant play the first damn HOTD anywhere because of the lost code. Now the only thing that gnaws at you is what could have been... we know the Saturn was capable of making HOTD look like Virtua Cop 2. Noway HOTD would have been arcade perfect but anything like VC2 would be considered a masterpiece IMO. So had we gotten a real port of HOTD that was given time and care and perhaps done by AM2, I think HOTD may possibly have been my #1 Saturn game of all time... although as a result the game may have cost $400 at this point had that been the case

That Euro 96 Soccer Game was horrible too. Still have nightmares about how bad it was. I hadn't played a saturn football game in about ten years and decided to get the 3 that I have out and give them a bash. It's a fact, euro 96 is the worst game in history. I put swws 97 on after and it felt like it was 2 generations ahead

I purchased it more as a football fan and it being a licensed major tournament game. I haven't played it since I purchased it and I doubt I ever will.

Hey Derek..... I never had Jurrasic Park back in the day with my original Saturn in the 90's but I actually picked it up off Ebay about 2 months ago and I LOVED it! Soooo many people here talk about the poor controls? Me personally - I don't get it. I have zero issues with the controls. The game plays really really well IMO. A game IMO that does have broken controls? Primal Rage. F*** me! The Special moves in that game are so ridiculous to pull off it makes a game I would really really love just painful to play.

Firstly about Jurassic Park Lost World. Its not that it controls bad. Not sure thats the proper explanation. The game just feels "heavy". I dont know how else to say it. The side scrolling just isnt fluid like most platformers back then. You dont move with as much flow as youd like especially with certain dinos and even the human.
I will say that they did a great job with the overall idea of the game. They made a cool polygon side scroller where you could play as your favorite dinos. I love JP games, most that people hate, but Lost World only connected with me so-so. I must also admit its due for another play through.
Dtss its funny you mention Primal Rage as other than Mortal Kombat, back in the mid 90s, it was my other favorite fighter. My brother and I loved it. On Genesis and even had the Game Boy version. Even had the Primal Rage action figures lol!
Again im not a hardcore fight guy like most here. I enjoyed my gimmicky arcade ones like Primal back then.
As you can deduce I love dinosaurs. Jurassic Park had come out a couple years before and had a huge effect on me.
Primal Rage, I agree is much different of a fighting game. It plays a bit heavier than MK but I loved the characters and moves. It even had fatalities. But after you practice it gets much easier to pull off specials etc. Just have to get used to it.
