Got it. Sorry. I don't have the Saturn version so I can't comment on which is better. But I agree with your assessment of the usual differences between ports. It's amazing what people argue over. Its even worse these days, over 360 vs PS3 and XB1 vs PS4. We are talking about having to looking at 1fps difference at certain points, or perhaps a screen tear 4 hours into a game. At least in the 16 bit days, the Megadrive and SNES had noticeable differences/qualities to each. Same with the N64/Saturn/PS1.

I think he's talking about PS1. That's the version I went with due to cost. I mean't the PSN version, which of course is the PS1 game, but obviously available to play on PS3 and PSP, same game, but about £3.95 instead of silly money. Its mean't to be better than the Saturn version anyway, although only marginally, as with most ports.

Hi all, I'm Nick. Long-time gamer, quite the Saturn fan. Give me a pad and Sega Rally and I'm pretty much set for however long you need to keep me quiet, but don't expect me not to sneak a quick King Of Fighters match in when I feel like it. I've got most of the good PAL games, and I'm in the early stages of building a Japanese collection. Outside of games... there is no outside of games, I write for Retro Gamer for a living! I do other stuff like play card games and watch comedy, but a lot of my life is gaming. Hi and welcome to the Saturn boards! :-) Are you THE Nick Thorpe then from Retro Gamer - if so, HI! Retro Gamer Magazine is fantastic, I've just ordered a 6 month subscription - you guys do a great job. If not, then still hi!

If you are REALLY keen on playing imported games, and at a rate 20% slower than what they are like on their native Japanese or North American system, then go for it.I've personally decided against it, and bought a standard official memory card (as you can save directly, rather than messing about transferring), and if I ever get the desire to play import games, I'll get myself a Japanese Saturn for a little bit extra instead (I just could never stomach playing NTSC games on a PAL machine, it always bugged me, but thats just me). I'm using the kind of cables (TV AV) that (seemingly) delay the system anyway, so an extra 20% deficit is unappealing. The memory card is pegged at £30 for a used copy on the same selling site, so I'll have to decide on one or the other; unfeasible really to buy both. AllyI went for the memory card, which cost be £18. This is the 512KB official one - not huge but provides ample and immediate direct storage. None of this transferring from the systems miniscule 32kb memory across to an action replay every time i need to clear up space. Had i been a massive fan of 2D beat em ups and scrolling shooters i might have been tempted by the japanese imports, but i'd probably rather have gone for a console conversion (50/60hz switch) or just buying a japanese console on the side.

No game is worth more than £50 in my opinion, old/new/sealed or hanging together with duck tape.
The whole retro rare games scene is a racket and con which takes advantage of anal collectors, and prevents people interested in videogames playing certain historical videogames. I totally support piracy in these respects - i'm curious about Panzer Dragoon Saga and Shining Holy Ark now, but more than happy to pay fuck all for them and download the ISO. Unless of course Sega can re-release them at an affordable and sensible price on Xbox Live/PSN (and fairly untouched, or enhanced with option of playing original like Radiant Silvergun).

Just seen the PAL PS1 version of this game costs an absolute fortune! Thankfully one can download it on PSN for about 3 quid or simply just play an eboot of the game on a PSP for freeeee. (sorry if this offends anyone, but old games that go now for extortionate prices on ebay etc are not helping the original developer - they're only making any revenue from PSN sales).

Many thanks for all your replies guys, it sounds like a fairly essential piece of kit. Absolutely compulsory. But is it worth playing NTSC 60hz imports on a PAL machines? Surely the 17.5%-20% slowdown to our PAL region will compromise the experience (and possibly even be glitchy)? Or you have to go for a 50/60hz switch modification. Also, as a memory card (action replay 4m plus), you have to transfer game data across - it doesn't directly write to the memory like a standard memory cart. Still useful to manage your save game storage, but a memory card is better for that purpose. I haven't noticed any issues with my set up. When you watch my reviews - have you noticed any? The only slow down I know of that was pretty noticeable was Marvel Super Heroes and In the Hunt and even then, Marvel Super Heroes was a PAL copy. I thought you had a Japanese Saturn as well though? I can't say I noticed any slowdown, I just like to play games as the lord Vishnu and Zeus intended...it would niggle in the back of my mind. Just having a PAL console slightly irks me - but I comfort read about many Saturn games being PAL optimised at the time. Sega seemed to look after the PAL base better than Nintendo and Sony ever did during that period (which is why I have a chipped PS1 and NTSC N64....and 50/60hz conversion on the SNES).

I seem to remember playing a demo of Actua Golf on the PS1 and thinking it was alright, despite feeling that golf is a stupid idea for a videogame or a real life sport.
As for Actua Soccer, well I think I have "Euro 96 - England" which is based on the same engine, and its pretty crappy compared to the Pro Evo, Fifa and ISS games of the same era.
Street Racer I thought was a decent effort at emulating Mario Kart (on the 16 bit consoles), I really liked the SNES version. The 32 bitters seemed to be a bit lacklustre by the time they came out though a couple of years later. Looked a bit old hat when alongside the likes of Ridge, Daytona and Sega Rally.

Welcome to the forum, trots off to look up Everdrive 64... ...HOLY SMOKES! I think you may have just made my day! Did I say welcome to the forum already? ;-) Thanks :-) Yes, the Everdrive 64 is rather amazing. I got mine from Retrotowers in the UK and it cost about £90-100 in total, including an 8GB sd card (thats all you need). You need to specify what region N64 you have, and they will create a cart for you, and all you need to do is place your ROMs on the SD card (4-8GB will give you PLENTY of storage for every N64 game going). Works a dream and I recommend it, especiallly seeing at the high cost of N64 games on ebay these days.

You're right - I became a whore a bit later in life :-)
I'm not quite convinced about the 3DO or Jag. The CD-32 would probably be more likely, as i'm an Amiga 500/1200 fan. I don't really have the space to add 2 more consoles though. Think i've had to draw the line for that generation. The Saturn, PS1 and N64 were the big hitters though with the majority of the best games and highlights of that gen....and i've started to recently explore the Saturn and N64 library (the latter due to the wonderful Everdrive 64).

Cheers both for the warm welcome.......N64 RULESSSSS, SATURN SUCKZZZZZ!
Joke :-) I am a whore for the entire 5th generation of consoles and happy to own all 3 (no, not the 3DO, Jaguar or CD32, i mean the proper 3!). Always was curious about the Saturn for many years long after its death and glad I got the big black beast in my games room, sitting proudly amongst the others.

Hi all, just joined the forum (you can thank Carter for that).
I'm fairly new on the Sega Saturn scene, despite my age (33). I bought a Sega Saturn (PAL) only this year, with a bunch of games and not only was it the first Saturn i've owned, its the first Saturn i've played.
Accumulated a reasonable collection of 34 games so far, all PAL ones. Not really going to buy a huge amount more as they've all been acquired this year, so not cheap.
JUST BOUGHT SATURN BOMBERMAN THOUGH! :-)
