I said it in the other thread, I hated Virtua Racing and Daytona for Saturn. I hated VR for Genesis too and I had that game when it was new. Virtua Racing just looks extremely ugly, what is it, cel shaded? The other cars don't react when you hit them do they? There's no drifting mechanics like in Sega Rally. It's just a boring racer. Have I played over 100 games for an hour or more on Saturn? No. But I have played over 150 Saturn games. I can easily name about a half dozen better racers, Sega Rally, Sega Touring Car, GT 24, Scorcher(so good!), Manx TT, Drift King, does Road Rash and Outrun count?, Wipeout, and I'll end it with Destruction Derby. I can't see how you can defend those two titles. The graphics looked bad in comparison to other racers and even played bad too. I'd love to hear a case for why Virtua Racing and Daytona aren't among the worst racers on Saturn.
Even worse was Race Drivin'. Easily the worst racer, by far, not even close. If Race Drivin' is a 1 out of 10, Virtua Racing is a 5.
As for Tomb Raider, I'm glad to see hate for it earlier in the thread. Yeah, the game is hard as fuck because the controls are complete shit. I remember playing it on my friend's PC when it first came out. It was an absolute mess. Just because a game is difficult doesn't make it good or give it value.

It looks and plays just like Fighting Vipers but with more variety and characters. I guess that means you also hate Fighting Vipers? I love FV, which is balanced. FMM is not. While FMM is hardly the worst Saturn game, I find it more of a novelty than a top Saturn game. I share peoples frustrations regarding Fighters Megamix. It's a good in 60hz mode but in 50hz I find it unbearable. I can't believe I never tried it in 60Hz mode despite all the other sluggish games I played on my Japanese Saturn when I had it. I won't be trying FMM in 60Hz anytime soon unless I can find a switched Saturn. I agree, using Picky vs Akira is unbalanced, but using Sarah Bryant vs Shun Di is balanced. What I mean to say is, the move sets look and play the same as the original titles. It's just inherently the FV characters are stronger. Right or are there more caveats?

My 3d controller's D-pad is dying. The membrane isn't firm enough to respond as quickly as I need it to, especially for fighting games. It's still generally workable, but it's definitely on its way out. This is my second controller to die on me due to overuse. My first was a PS2 controller's X button. How many controllers have you guys gone through?

I had this happen with my Saturn. I used the disc swap trick for a while with a good solid medium and burned slow. I found that the game would freeze from time to time due to the apparent heat from the system. I was playing it during the Summer. So I put a fan on the console and it stopped freezing. I don't know why it worked, but it did.

I certainly don't dislike Megamix, but having played it a few months back. It was nowhere near as good as I remembered. The delayed and robotic kicking and punching is annoying. It's clearly a result of using the Fighting Vipers engine. Oh, so the Virtua Fighters' moves felt different from VF2 to Megamix? For bad games to avoid, I have to submit Race Drivin' the sequel to Hard Drivin' on Genesis which apparently used the exact same 3d engine. Terrible looking game with bad controls. Controversially, I don't think there was anything special about Virtua Racing or Daytona USA. It's been a while since I played Daytona, but I remember the car handling was slippery and the tracks/graphics were nothing special.

Whoa, whoa, whoa Fighters Megamix hate? Back the truck up, beep, beep, beep. Sure, the backgrounds are lower resolution and the amount of characters in the game make the game inherently unbalanced. It was still an awesome fighting game. If I'm not mistaken, the mechanics and moves for the characters in both VF2 and FV were exactly the same. So you basically had both games in one package.
I used to play it with a buddy of mine all the time. We'd get so pissed off at each other. "You can use that character, but you can't do the cheap move." Obviously we'd do the cheap moves and we'd have to go outside for a cigarette to cool off.

Ok, I got it to work this time. I definitely used those settings the first time I tried it. Maybe the image was bad or I mistitled the file. Thanks for making me try it again mate! Just curious, what do you mean when you say it's the -best- format? It's simply the most compatible? I'm going to go back and try Bug! and Rayman in CDI now to see if they play any better. So far, it didn't fix the slowdowns in SOTN, I guess that's just inherent to the port though.
I've tested about 150 images so far with only a handful of games that had a problem in CCD. Sometimes I'll get games in MDS and they work fine for the most part too.
Edit Bug! and Rayman didn't work in CDI any better than CCD.

To update I finally figured out how to change disk formats properly. I couldn't find free software for it. Alcohol didn't work, DiscJuggler didn't work, and obviously Imgburn didn't work. I even tried following a guide I found online for discjuggler to no avail. The Rhea website even says CDI is the best format to use, but I gave it a try and couldn't get it going. The only thing that worked was CloneCD. I updated the firmware to version 3.4.0 and all my CCD files work now, with only a few exceptions. You don't even need the full version of CloneCD. They give you a trial period with no limit to image size.

I remember PDS used to be like 100 - 150$ for just the disks back in the early 2000's. If he was offered the game for 150 pounds with the box it should've easily been worth the money 5 years ago... Although I remember selling my Genesis and Nes around that time for relatively cheap in comparison to what they're going for today. Perhaps the retro game market has picked up since the late 00's due to the youtubers.
On topic, I totally agree with linkt101. The game is so well made it holds up to games today. What it really comes down to is pacing, production value, and length. The game is short, sweet, and story centric. In other words, just like games are today. The combat system is obviously very well done, but the combat wasn't -over- done. It was never a chore and you never felt like you were forced to level grind. It always stayed fresh as the combat was mixed with exploration and cut scenes.
And gee, was that game gorgeous! Absolutely stunning for Saturn, a true achievement.

Thanks for the responses. You're right, assman, it doesn't accept cue/bin. It only accepts CDI, CCD+IMG+SUB, MDS+MDF ISO (games with no audio tracks and homebrew). I'm familiar with the process of converting file formats and ripping cds. I'd just like to be able to find one that's free where I can avoid the malware. I guess I'm stuck with discjuggler.
Catch22, have you ever tried loading your disc images onto a virtual drive and ripping them from the virtual drive? You might be able to save a bit of time and money that way.

Hi guys! I think I signed up for here several years ago looking for help on which types of CD-Rs are best for burning Saturn games on and the community was quite helpful. So I got the Saturn Rhea a few months ago and finally hooked her up over the weekend. It works great! The only thing is I really want to rip my copy of X-Mas NiGHTS and some of my other games. I also need to convert some file formats. So does anyone know of free software to get this done that doesn't contain malware?
PMs are welcome, thanks guys!
