Sonic would be the obvious answer.

At first I thought the love for Virtual Hydlide was a troll and I'm sure to some extent it is. But to look at it as a whole, they tried so hard and had such a cool idea for the game. They didn't compromise with their vision, they just ran out of time and printed it running at 5 fps. Overall the game has a lot of heart and charm.

Panzer Dragoon Saga has been the exception, but this narrative that various members on here and bloggers elsewhere keep pushing in relation to out of control prices in recent times simply isn't true. Look at the cost of your average Saturn game over time. There's pretty cool. Where do you get a price chart like that?

I've played a lot more Fighitng Vipers than Last Bronx, but Last Bronx always felt like it wasn't fully completed as a game.

A-Life is the artificial life system. You can interact with the Nightopians (little flying cone-headed creatures), affect their mood (which in turn affects the tone of the music), mate them, hatch their eggs and so forth. If I recall correctly, pressing X+Y+Z while paused gives you the Nightopians' current status. It's essentially the precursor to the Chao Garden in Sonic Adventure. Personally, I've never really bothered with it. Aside from the fact that they're ugly little assholes with a death-wish, you can only interact with them during normal gameplay (as opposed to Sonic Adventure), which obviously means that you need to compromise your run to make them happy. Is this something that was commonly known at the time? I obviously didn't have a Saturn during its run so I have no idea if this was a well known thing or a secret hidden feature. If it is hidden sometimes I wonder how much time devs commit to features that may be cool, but 90% of the players may never know about. It was advertised that the music was dynamic depending on the mood of the nightopians. Things like the King Pian and the castle weren't advertised. Xmas NiGHTS gave you the ability to change the music manually. It also shows how many Nightopians you have and what they're doing; some are sleepy, some fly upside down, etc. One neat mechanic was dashing through enemies. When the enemy is in a ball flying around the screen, if it hits a Nightopian it will fuse with the Nightopian and become a new creature. Those new creatures will breed and create other hybrids. This is kind of a small picture, but this is what that screen in Xmas NiGHTS looked like. You can see some of them have blue heads. You can see in the picture there, there's one wearing a crown. That was the goal, to create the King Pian. Once you get the King Pian they build a Pian tower in the background of that mare. This video goes into some detail on the system.

Interesting bug. How long were you working on the a-life save for?

Is photobucket a UK thing? Everyone I see usually uses imgur since it's so quick and easy to use.

Before I got a Rhea, I used to use the swap trick. You basically switch out the burnt disc while it's spinning for a real disc so the machine can read the copy protection, then you put the burnt cd back in. I did that for something like 15 years and never killed the laser. It definitely -did- push the system pretty hard to read those CDs. So you would be putting wear and tear on the console.
The Rhea is basically 1 to 1 perfection. I think the load times are better since your system will never skip on a scratched up disc.

WTF mate? Those first two games look and sound absolutely horrific. I think this is as close as you've ever come to a loaded poll with one answer.

Wow, I -completely- forgot I owned Virtua Fighter Kids back in the day. Man, I must've sold it on ebay with NHL 97 and Steep Slope Sliders back then. I don't remember -ever- playing it with my friends. It was pretty terrible by my memory. Their heads were so big you couldn't dodge anything and the moves were all over the place. It was just a novelty game. Not at all balanced.

That water effect in Astra Superstars is gorgeous. So weird how some levels have it while others have this bizarrely static background.
I've played Asuka 120% a few times. It's probably pretty good, wasn't my cup of tea and it didn't strike me as overly sexual. You know what they always say 2d girls > 3d girls.

Lemmings 3d looks rather interesting. I kinda miss that game. It was so relaxing and a good time killer. I'm kind of surprised they haven't reboot it for mobile devices.

This is a really tough question to answer since my favorite games don't really fall into a neat category. Or there are just one off titles like Mr. Bones or Sega Rally that I love, but the other platformers/racers don't really tickle my fancy. Even lightgun for Virtua Cop 1 and 2 doesn't seem like I could say "This is my favorite genre."
RPG
Panzer Dragoon Saga and Dark Savior were amazing.
Fighter
I definitely played Megamix and Virtual On the most out of any multiplayer titles, by far and away.
Shmup
Like I said, there are so many one off games in different genres that I like more than shmups. Shmup is definitely not my favorite genre, overall. Not even close, but Shmups are generally of good quality and I really got into Galactic Attack and Cotton 2.
