Horde is another one of those games that I passed over at Blockbuster thinking it looked awful. Although Ive heard very decent things. Might be due for another try. Astal was the other game Id pass over at BB all the time, even if there was nothing else to rent.

Fair enough I should mention I played Riven on PC as well. I felt Myst did everything for me and Riven didnt have any of the same "first time thrills". Riven is very well received game so my opinion isnt widespread but to me Myst is a great game.

wasn't there some kind of asshole on this forum buying up all deep fear copies to raise it's price? This has become sort of a big practice in the resale game. Happened to alot of NES titles as well.

I always found the visual aesthetic of the original Bug! to be incredibly grey and bland. I liked Bug Too! much better, though it was much too tough for me back in the day. It's one of those games I really ought to give another go at one of these days, as I still have the disc (and take great pleasure in listening to the audio tracks!). I agree Bug II added a lot more visual pizzazz to the series.

I will admit I don't LOVE Bug but its a nice early Saturn game that is worth playing in bursts simply for the character. Had the system lasted a bit longer maybe we would have gotten a fully polygonal Bug that looked like Croc

Fighters MegaMix should be avoided at all costs. While on paper the game is awesome, once you actually play it you realise how broken the game mechanics are and how cheap the A. I. is. It looks and plays just like Fighting Vipers but with more variety and characters. I guess that means you also hate Fighting Vipers? I personally always preferred the style of Vipers over VF. When my parents got me a Saturn we had VF2 included and my brother got FV the same day. Always liked the feel of Vipers more. Both are great games to play tho. MegaMix in particular is one I need to spend more time with but I remember it being solid.

Does anyone else think bug is ugly? Yes. Bug is bad on all levels. I hate the level design. I hate the character design. I hate the music. I hate the controls. It is 90's as fuck. For me it was an archetypal SoA game, lacking in any charm or technical proficiency. I consider it to be the Saturn's Bubsy 3D. I know there are some people on this site who like the Bug games. I'm sorry but this is just how I feel. I probably disagree with every single thing you said and your apology to Bugs fans is accepted

Are these games worth me getting/getting in to? I was never really into this genre when I had my original Saturn. I was too busy playing NBAAction/Mortal Kombat/Street Fighter and Resident Evil. Would you guys recommend them? They do intrigue me. I was playing the same games back when I had my Saturn but MYST was one of the games I spent the most time on. My friend down the street had it and I borrowed it one day. I must have dumped dozens of hours into it. Myst/Riven and games like it were made for PC but my nostalgia for MYST is the Saturn version and I can still play it no problem today. Its cheap enough and if youre a Saturn guy absolutely get it. Personally Riven never did it for me when I had it for PSX. To me MYST was the hands down better one if you played it first. You PAL guys got a few more Myst style point and clicks than we did in the US. Atlantis being one, Frankenstein with Tim Curry was another (popular in the US on PC tho). Ill throw in Discworlds as well. Myst and Riven were big in the US but most people had PCs already so I can see why the demand for those others just wasnt there. I will admit the Frankenstein PAL version is one of the few releases you guys got that I still want if not just for Tim Curry and Point/Click nostalgia. Pricey tho.

I saw a youtube video of a guy doing a lag test. The upscaler we have was somewhere around 3-4 frames of lag which is perfectly fine for 99% of the games and gamers out there. Of course when he tested the XRGB mini, he had 0 or even -1 frames per lag. Pretty cool.
But ya its totally worth the $$ until a XRGB makes sense. Especially for those of us in the US that never had SCART on our TVs, the color produced even by this set up is fantastic. I can only imagine how much more impressed Ill be once I finally get an XRGB. But until then I think this thing looks great. I can see it being a final solution for most casual gamers.
Should also mention Im trying to get my Trinitron moved over to the new place so I can play Light gun games with the Stunner. If the Light gun issue didnt exist with modern TVs, Id probably just switch all my systems over to HDtv with XRGB. Unfortunately we still need the tube for the guns to work.

Nights with the 3D game pad is a dream of course. Thats the way it was intended. I love the standard Model 1 Saturn controller but I use the 3D pad by default for just about every game. NIGHTS should not be left on the shelf. Its a game that should be brought out on a nice sunny afternoon for a quick go (Although you could go outside on a nice day too). Breathe in the music, the colors and the level designs. I can't wait until Christmas because thats when Xmas Nights comes out. Only time I can play it but its magical in its own right at that time. As for the Upscaler, I have this one: www.ebay.com/itm/151623476813I should mention that is not the seller I bought from. You can find this Upscaler pretty much all over Ebay for around $50 USD. Its a generic chinese one. It feels very well built though. Next you need the Saturn SCART cable. The ONLY place to get these is from this seller: www.ebay.com/usr/retro_console_accessoriesShe hand makes them and they are great. Get the CSYNC Scart cable if you have Model 1 or the regular SCART cable if you have Model 2. Those are the only 2 things you need. I must warn that the hardcore video people kinda hate this upscaler. The only real hardcore #1 upscaler is the XRGB Mini (Framemeister) but it costs over $300 USD. It apparently reproduces everything down to scanlines with almost ZERO input lag. The Upscaler that I have costs, with the SCART cable around $60 USD total. Since I have never had an upscaler before, this one is gorgeous to me. The colors pop, the polygons even have a slightly crisper feel without being blurry. Totally changed the way I looked at a few games. The best part is just by hitting a button you can cycle through different aspect ratios and frame rates. I have mind on a perfect letterbox mode that I believe is the 2nd after the default. I will likely get a XRGB mini when the price drops a bit or Im ready to take the next leap but for now this thing is magical.

Since I moved a few months ago I haven't been able to play Saturn until now. I got the cheaper Scart to HDMI upscaler (not the XRGB Mini but hopefully down the road) with the Scart csync cable. Im just blown away by the colors and look to Saturn games. I know this isnt the top end upscaler but everything pops. Im literally going through every Saturn game now with awe. Mostly have been trying the colorful polygon games like Nights, Die Hard Arcade, Virtua Cop. These games have never looked so amazing before.
I think I was on way too much of a color kick because I popped in Panzer Dragoon and was let down. Now its one of my favorite games on the system so I love the game, but I think my brain was all about getting the most colorful games on the new upscaler. PD series is more about the darker apocalyptic art style. Ill go back to it later when Ive calmed down a bit lol.
Backing up a bit, I had forgot how amazing of a conversion Die Hard Arcade was as the last time I played it was probably 4-5 years ago with my brother. Some of the best looking polygons on the system. And it runs super fast. Nights was another game that I had not played in a while. Memories rushed back immediately of the beautiful music and levels. With the added pop of the upscaler it has somehow turned into an even better game than before. And finally like I mentioned in my last post Ive been playing Shining Force III... the battle effects especially when magic is being cast looks brilliant. Some of the best Ive ever seen on a Saturn.

I agree that shmups are better in 2D form but I admit that Einhander for PS1 is one that really holds up IMO. Einhander did not look pretty to me. It has its moments, but overall I just did not like it much. I think at some point it's what one is used to. Like most 3D from 32 bit days, a bit of nostalgia goes a long way too. I just have this thing for the better polygon games of the late 90s even to this day. The 2D shooters definitely hold up better. Luckily most shmups are 2D.

Finally bought Shining Force III a couple weeks ago at a shop (mint condition) I am of course talking about the Western US release. Been interested in this since it was released in 1998 - mostly to look at the polygon battles and environments.
Im only about 10 hours into the game but so far, for my first strategy RPG experience, its pretty fun. I know Im getting a different experience playing the modified version of Scenario 1 but I'm not so hardcore in RPGs to play all 3 of them anyway.
Things that I want to immediately point out is how impressed I am with the polygon towns, the character models in the battle mode, and the effects when magic is used. When you go inside any of the houses or church the graphics are even more impressive with the hint of light coming in from the windows. The only thing that would have put the graphics over the top for me would have been full polygon characters even in the overworld. However I assume it was much better for the games performance that sprites were used. I cant imagine the slow down with 50+ characters on a battlefield. They don't look bad so its not a knock on the game at all. Had they pulled off a fully polygon game I may have considered this the best looking game on the system.

Because of this thread I popped in Bug for the first time in forever. I actually have no problem with it. I think the graphical style is very well done and clean. Sometimes those early 2D sprites put on a 3D setting didnt age amazingly but I think Bug looks and plays pretty clean. For early Saturn platformers I liked what Bug and Clockwork Knight tried.

I've found that I don't care too much for shooters that are too 3D. This isn't limited to the Saturn either, but also on the PlayStation. Otherwise great games like Souky or Thunder Force V are pretty ugly compared to their 16 bit predecessors. I hear Souky gets better, so I'm going to give it a chance, though playing it I just wanted to play Layer Section instead. I agree that shmups are better in 2D form but I admit that Einhander for PS1 is one that really holds up IMO.
