Generally people find the fully 3D stuff from that era as not aging well. 2D games aged nicely and if anything are more appreciated now. Astal was an overlooked and seemingly outdated game to most back then but now its more respected than most 3D games.
However my nostalgia is heavy for the 32/64 bit polygon era. It was one of the biggest leaps in gaming history... from 2D sprites to 3D polygon games. Its likely nostalgia is needed to enjoy alot of the games from this era but to me I got super excited when the Saturn started pumping out more polygon games late in its life. I just always wanted to see the system do them well enough even though it wasnt easy to pull off.
Again maybe its just the nostalgia but as much as I love the great 2D games, Panzer Saga, Quake, Burning Rangers really amaze me with what they pulled off with polygons. The entire Panzer Dragoon series in fact. Just about anything Sega did in house was and is great to look at for me. Diehard Arcade, Fighting Vipers, Megamix, VF etc., Shining Force 3 (what Ive seen of it), Virtua Cop (HOTD would probably be listed here had AM2 done it), Sega Rally, Steep Slope Sliders, All Star Hockey, WWS, and so on. There were a few 3rd party companies that knew how to push polygons a bit. Capcom and definitely Lobotomy Software.
Had the Saturn survived (in the West) even 1 more year... lets say up until the Western Dreamcast release, I bet we would have seen a couple dozen more top notch Polygonal 3D games.

Hey welcome! Its not all UKers here. Im also from New York. Buffalo to be exact. There are a fair amount of USers here. We never really had a Saturn website in the North America. Mostly sub forums on dozens of other forums. We all are on the same team regardless except youll find UKers seem to think their cases were better than ours!

Hey Izod, I too am a huge classic Survival Horror genre fan. My favorite genre in the 90s, early 2000s before it sorta died off.
As you mentioned Deep Fear and Res Evil are your two exact matches for the genre. And if you havent played the first Res Evil play the Saturn version. Its fantastic IMO and has a bunch of little fun extras even if you're a fan of the PSX version. But there is also Alone in the Dark 2. Its a bit slower but still has its moments. Not too expensive either.
D and Enemy Zero are horror games but slightly different genres. If you are specifically looking for the Res Evil/Silent Hill/Dino Crisis style game then you only have two options.
But if youre ok with some solid Horror/Sci-Fi games then absolutely get them. Enemy Zero is a unique game even apart from D and its cool that it was a Saturn exclusive. After that you're looking at House of the Dead (light gun with horror theme) and ill throw in Alien Trilogy because its a moody Sci-fi FPS.

I did read somewhere how the PS1 could only do 2D this way: Make polygons and put sprites over them. Sounds extremely bizarre, but hey, Sony is known for complicated hardware up until the PS4. There is a very mild truth to this, but not in the way you think. What Capcom actually did was to outright replace certain effects with polygons, in order to save as much memory as they can - the hit sprites in Alpha 3 for instance become hit polys. Not especially noticable or damaging to the game. Texturing a polygon as a sprite would deliver all the same kind of issues that textures had at the time, no matter the polygon shape or texture quality. The characters all universally remain sprites in Alpha. Alpha 1 and 2 are very meh conversions on PS1, but they pulled the rabbit out of the hat for Alpha 3 all things considered (even with all those frames dropped). I actually prefer that version to the Dreamcast game for some reason, although the Saturn dumps on them both. Oh Capcom, why could you not say goodbye to the Saturn with Alpha 3 instead of Final Fight Revenge? What an incredible way to piss on a beautiful legacy. I always wondered, how is Final Fight Rev? Ive watched videos before and it looked ok for a 3D game. Its also interesting because its all in English and made by Capcom USA. The price of the game is dumb however.

Sometimes I hate talking about the close call releases. Like the what ifs. What if they released Snatcher/Policnauts in the US for Saturn. What if Lunar 1/2, Grandia, Cotton, Castlevania had simply been localized instead of Shining Wisdom. What if House of the Dead was polished. What if Devil Summoner had been localized that Gamefan claimed it close to being finished. Its amazing how much more amazing west library would look. I think its probably better to just look at what we got and appreciate it. Sometimes Im glass half full like... lucky we even got Panzer Saga or any of SF3 or any of Burning Rangers etc.

Ya I have a feeling had it actually come over it may have only landed on Saturn kinda like Snatcher only came over here on Sega CD. Its the only system we know it was coming over for but we will never know for sure.

I always forgot this was on 3DO over there. If they had brought it west (although likely similar syncing issues) it would have given the library quite a boost. I doubt it. Policenauts didn't do much for the 3DO in Japan. Also, it was released in September 1995, so if you add on the time it would take to localize a game with such extensive cutscenes, it would have been one of the last 3DO games released in the West. And the 3DO library was hardly lacking in sci fi interactive movie games: The Daedalus Encounter, Hell: A Cyberpunk Thriller, Flashback, Creature Shock, Wing Commander III, Space Pirates, Cyberia, Robinson's Requiem, etc., etc. I think the reason the Saturn version got canned would have been the same reason a PSX or 3D0 port would have been canned. I meant it would have given the 3DO library a standout title today. Back then I dont think it would have done much but today it would have given the system a reason for gamers and collectors to appreciate it more.

LOL. Certainly did NOT apply to the PS1. Please check your facts. The direction you need to be looking in when addressing complicated hardware of the 5th gen is the muthaf*ckin' Saturn! And the Jaguar! Funny thing about the PS1 needing to do polygons even for 2D... People don't mention this much anymore, but if you check out gaming magazines from the months leading up to the PS1 launch, there were actually a few rumors that the PS1 couldn't do 2D well, just as there were rumors that the Saturn couldn't do 3D well. The 95-98 range were the years I read the most gaming mags (gamepro/gamefan/egm) and this was certainly mentioned alot especially in GameFan. (how PSX was a poorer 2D system). The fun part was when they couldn't believe some of the games the Saturn would pull off such as Quake or Panzer Dragoon. I remember GameFan doing a cover story on Quake and just not believing it was running on a Saturn.

I picked up a mint copy with manual two months ago for $110pound - $220AUD. Still pricey but ive wanted this game for years now. I love this style of game and had to have it. Looking at EBayUK now, the cheapest PAL copy is $180pound $360AUD. Makes me feel alright for paying $220AUD ) If you LOVE this style of game as I do, personally, I wouldn't even think about getting the Japanese copy. You just wont enjoy it the same, hang in there and try to find a (somewhat) cheaper copy! Im a diehard classic Survival Horror genre fan. Mainly from the late 90s and very early 2000s when the genre actually existed. Silent Hill, RE, Dino Crisis etc. However I admit I never played Deep Fear. You figure my fav genre from that era mixed with my favorite system would be a match in heaven but it simply came down to not being released in North America. Sounds silly but I always kinda resented that. However I recently found the USA NTSC version in its 100% complete form (one of those lost and found releases). I feel like having what is basically the North American version, just minus the case and manual has pushed me into finally giving it a go. Im sure Ill like it. Anything with the old style survival horror feel I love. Maybe I can make some mock up cover art and back art for a US version

Ive never played the Saturn version but Ive always heard it runs worse. Why do you think that is? Saturn was supposed to do 2D better.

Had to reply to this as Ive noticed the spike in Powerslave US value too. The last 6-7 sold copies have ended 55-70 usd (complete). Although it still has some listings in $50 range. Used to be, not even a year ago, a $25 CIB game. I think its started to finally get a bit more respect in the every growing Saturn collecting market. AS it should.
I think its kind of cool to see a retro FPS take on that type of pricing. And its a well deserved game to hit such heights. Its one of the finest classic FPS of all time and amazingly it was built on a Saturn. That said I hope you picked up a copy because its a must own for the Saturn library. I still claim had it existed on PC in its slavedriver engine form it would have the same name recognition as Duke 3D, Shadow Warrior and Blood. Instead being a Saturn original game, and a lesser known PS1 port, it got brushed aside.
Usually FPS games have lower values for consoles and such as they are generally mass produced and not as rare. Sega Saturn is a bit different though in general but Id say most of the FPS are rising. Duke Nukem 3D and Quake are starting to see 35+ range for complete copies and sometimes as much as 40. Alien Trilogy Ive seen go in the 25-30 range more lately as well.
Shows more that complete Saturn games across the board are going up still.

One odd additional FPS/controller fact is that Congo uses the Mission Stick Ironic, as it's a horrible game regardless of what control style you use. You are talking to literally THE one person who likes Congo so be careful I actually played it with the mission stick and its not bad. More FPS would have been interesting to see use it.

It upset me alot to hear how close this was to being released in the United States, only to be cancelled because of the programmers not being able to sync the mouths with the dubbing. Such a silly thing! That's what comes of gamers making complaints like "this version only runs at 20 frames per second when the original ran at 30 frames per second!" Lol this be true. I think the thing that irks me the most is that Konami and Kojima had some of the best programmers around yet they let something as silly as non syncing dub ruin a US localization. Although I guess its possible that the syncing was so far off that it would have taken a ton of time. Without knowing for sure. However simply doing subtitles instead of dub would have worked just fine as many games have done this. Although had this actually been released over here (and it was supposed to have stunner support, possibly bundled with it) youd probably be paying $500 for a copy anyhow.

::SIGH:: This. Very much this. Not having a proper 2D Hang-On game on the Saturn is criminal. I would have loved for them to do a 2D sprite Shinobi game as well, a proper one. Even a port of an earlier game would have been nice. Though I have nothing against Shinobi X, keep in mind, and that game is on my wishlist. The Saturn 3D Hang-On can go hang. xDerekRx: You got me pegged, 100%. I did read up on Lobotomy Software, thanks to this forum, and their games are now on my wishlist. Admittedly, I play arcade games more than any other genre on the system, but I will slow down at some point, to play some actual console games. Nights is actually on the back burner, if you can believe that (never played it).and I'd like to get my hands on a 3D analog pad, as well as a Saturn keyboard and mouse for FPS. The Saturn keyboard isn't supported by any first person shooters, though. And to the best of my recollection, the only first person shooter which supports the Saturn mouse is Doom. One odd additional FPS/controller fact is that Congo uses the Mission Stick
