A pain in the rear losing anything any way no matter how big or small.
It might be just the power boards in the Saturn's, or if they have completely gone don't forget the cases might come in handy if you need to swap anything. The outside of the machines can look the same quality as before of course.
I'm sure your already on it..., make sure you get the wiring of your home checked out too just in case there is some hidden damage.

Really sorry to hear and hope it won't be too long before your back on your feet again.
BTW you got away lightly as there is a massive storm system over Europe stretching from France to Poland and yesterday it claimed 11 lives from lightning strikes. 6 were stood under a sodding tree... They expect more strikes from lightning today.

If it takes a couple of screens to get that perfect one and your not paying over the odds then taking a hit on one won't feel as bad as the effort will be worth in the end.

If it's not faulty then make sure you have the 3D pad switch set to the way you want to play the game before you switch the machine on.
+ = Digital D-pad. The whole thing will work like a normal controller.
O = Analog. Games made before 1996 will see the controller as a steering wheel. Virtua Fighter Remix was released long before the 3D pad was so you will need to use it in Digital mode.

Check the menu options of the TV and also the remote in case there is a button to change the tone of the picture from say warm to cold looking as that can change the overall colour.
There might even be a button on the remote that rotates on something like 3 settings of brightness from a dark, medium and a bright picture. On top of that you also have the menu options to override the current set brightness level, (if your TV has this button feature).
Do these checks first and make sure you have the picture settings close to where you might want it to be!
Don't forget Brightness can effect the overall colour, too bright and it can look washed out. Lower the Brightness and increase the contract instead.
Failing that and as a last resort once your kinda close to where you want the picture before you do... Check on the back of the TV for the model number of the screen and search online for the service mode code. If you can find it and are in the service mode then make of note of everything you see as in number settings before you tamper with anything, (so you can put it all back if your not happy). The service mode code for the remote can be different between models of the same brand, you might get lucky if you can't find it but look for a CRT and not an LCD as they are later. Whatever it might be it has to be entered in order and quickly. Once in service mode look for something like this down the list, note it maybe different:
R ** G ** B **
The ** equals a value from say 0-60, each one can be any number. You might of already noticed your looking at RGB aka Red Green & Blue. This will allow you to change the over all tone of the colour mix like if you want white to be pure and bright, or a slightly cream white. Or make Red a blood red instead of warm red ect...
As for the sharpness you do lose some of that the bigger you go so it's no good trying to think it will look like a smaller screen. The scan lines get bigger the larger you go making it look as if it's worse when up close but if you step right back away from screen they will slowly blend in and the picture should look clearer the further away you are compared to a smaller TV. There may also be a setting for sharpness in the normal TV settings. Look closely at the picture as you increase it, too high and you may start to see ghosting in the pixels. Too low and it will blur obviously.
If it still looks no better after adjusting the sharpness then it might be the age of the Tube it's self as in it has seen many hours of usage. Tubes tend to blur and become slowly darker over time the more they are used, just like a modern light bulb does. It's not something an owner will notice if used every day as they get used to the change over time, but going from a good screen to a second hand one you might... For a Tube to be very blurry and dark it would of been used a heck of a lot though and is really on it's last legs.
Don't give up on it though, spend a couple of days allowing your eyes to get used to it first which may take a number of hours regardless of the settings.Hopefully your be able to get the colour and brightness right any way.

Have a think about how close you will sit in front of the screen when using it. This is what I was worried about, if its somehow too big! Id hate that problem. But I dont mind to sit a touch further back. I think Ill take a chance on it for almost no cost and if its too big Ill opt for a 22-27 range. Put Vitrua Fighter 2 on first, your love it.

Have a think about how close you will sit in front of the screen when using it. Sizes 14" to 21" are best suited to Saturn/Genesis if you sit about arms length away from the screen. Above 21" and your want to sit back more. If your happy to sit a couple of meters away then go for bigger. Sizes 21" to 32" are best suited to PS2 & Classic XBOX if you sit at arms length away, (arcade machine style). These machines are some what wasted on anything smaller than 21" because of higher detail the textures run at.

The arcade version of Roadblasters is on Midway Arcade Treasures 1 for PS2 & XBOX. I like to use a steering wheel (logitech) to play it on XBOX just to make the experience a bit more authentic. And yeah Roadblaster is a nice game. Not perfect but very nice indeed is the Atari Lynx version. Not too bad is the Sega Genesis version which never released in Europe, the original Genesis version is region free and will work on PAL machines.

I would of given an arm and a leg for a perfect arcade version on Saturn to go with OutRun... For as long as I can remember though people have said don't eat the berries as they will make you ill no matter how nice they look on the tree.
In other words don't be fooled by the graphics as it's not the arcade version and the handling was said to be poor.

Do i need to play the first part of SoT to understand the Story of part 2? According to Wikipedia Story of Thor 2 (Legend of Oasis) is a prequel to Story of Thor (Beyond Oasis) so you're probably going to be fine having not played it. You can pick up Beyond Oasis cheap on Steam though and it's a good little game, been playing it myself but as I said it's technically a sequel. and just to add to this as a way of getting a physical copy if you have an XBOX360 or PS3... Beyond Oasis/Story of Thor is on Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection (NTSC) & Sega Mega Drive Ultimate Collection (PAL) for XBOX360 & PS3. In PAL Land all MD games are the Sega Genesis versions and they all run @ 60hz.

That's interesting. I have a tangential question. Is the analogue stick supposed to twist? Like, when you take it by your index finger and thumb you can twist it like a clock slightly. Also, have you ever been using it and then it just randomly crunches for some reason or another? Yeah, by design they twist a couple of millimeters so nothing to worry about. If it feels gritty there maybe some crap inside the pad, take apart and clean, blow or gently hoover over the naked analog stick it's self pointing it in all directions as you do. The naked stick is a self contained unit soldered to the board so cant be taken apart, your see the top is exposed though and that's where your want two blow the crap out of...

It's depends how retro you really want to go I guess... Someone had a time machine for sure, but the only way Ryo Hazuki from Shenmue could of played his Saturn on a TV in 1986 was via RF.

I also own a french copy. lord knows why they made saturn games in french and indeed it makes it a lot harder because french people like video games too...?? Normally PAL games supported more than one language out of the box and why our manuals are crap as you could have 3 languages on the same sodding page. Maybe it was released later once the translation had been done for Saturn? I've never played the French version any way so guessing. Maybe the French FMV would not fit the same disc as the file size was now bigger in Saturn form than PS1? Who knows...

That Sega Ages OutRun for PS2 is neat, but as for Virtua Racing what a let down. It looks the part, almost sounds the part bar the fucked up engine sound yet the thing that really killed it was the handling. If you thought Saturn V.R was bad then think again as the car does not want to steer unlike the arcade machine which could cut corners like a knife through butter... A real shame any way.
