P.s. I've left out 2D shooters and other 2D titles as arguably they are perfect as they are. Feel free to disagree.

Rumours of the upcoming Resident Evil 2 remake, plus the ongoing trend of dredging up old games, got me thinking. How many Saturn games really are marooned on the system, in need of a remaster/remake?
I've not included the following as I'm aware of existing remastered versions or sequels in recent years that stick to the original formula: Daytona USA, Virtua Fighter, Nights into Dreams, Radiant Silvergun, Guardian Heroes, Sega Rally, Sonic R, Capcom & SNK fighters, Resident Evil, Tomb Raider, House of the Dead, Princess Crown (Odin Sphere has a different story but is basically a modern version).

The only way you can damage a game while it's in the machine is to cause laser burn (i.e. the disc touches a hot laser lens while it's spinning). This could happen if you severely knock the console while it's spinning the disc. Don't think I've ever done it but have received discs with the damage.

If I was him I'd just sell the rights to the technology to a small electronics manufacturer. Or come to some kind of franchise/ commission arrangement. Surely the joy of inventing and producing his own device has worn off by now. Maybe I'm wrong.

Oh yeah, I want original format but I know things like Tamoraru and EAR are games that I just wont ever get legit unless I win a lot of money! I just didnt know whether the quality was great or not. I mainly wanted to know as I was thinking about selling Saga.... although I think I may hold onto it. It is fantastic! For what it's worth, I'd say never sell PDS unless you need the money to eat or no longer have a Saturn. To me it's the definitive game on the system and one of the few Saturn classics that really can't be played anywhere else in one form or another.

A Rhea would be nice but it's genuinely difficult to get one. Unless you want to pay big bucks for one on eBay. Don't feed the scalpers. You can get one, it just requires a bit of planning. In fact, you guys in Europe have an incredibly less painful time since the creator (based in Poland) is in or within an hour of your time zones. Sales typically seem to go live on a Saturday, mid to late morning (GMT+1) For us stateside, that means being up in the very early hours of the morning. I've got a Rhea and GDEMU, so it can be done. -Keep an eye on the blog at gdemu.wordpress.com -He does batches of Rhea, Phoebe, GDEMU. Seems to alternate between products. -A sale will be announced a couple days prior, something like "Rhea orders will open this Saturday". Exact time is never announced, but like I've said orders I've made seem to open mid to late morning. -Keep a browser window open on the product order page you're trying to buy, refresh it often during that morning window. There's even services you can use that will send you a notification of when a website sees an update, how reliable they are I'm not sure. -When sales go live the order page will change from "closed" to text boxes where you enter your info and paypal email addy. -You'll get an email notification a day or so later saying you're on the list, then a paypal request when your device is ready to ship. A bit of a pain, but after you've made the order once, you're set. A bit of time on a Saturday morning vs the cumulative time of burning CD-R's for every game you want to play, and possible coasters. The slight irritation of purchasing a Rhea or Phoebe and setting up the SD card is way less of a hassle than dealing with Pseudo Saturn IMO. Good tips, thank you

There are guys on Facebook that will sell you a Pseudo Saturn cart they have flashed, and a bunch of "repros" i.e. cds they have burned themselves. Not worth paying for unless you really can't be bothered to do those tasks yourself.
The risk of damaging the laser is overblown in my view. Yes it might fail eventually. But you can easily buy a new laser unit for around £10 on ebay. I just fitted one and it's easy with an instruction video off YouTube.

What's with the obnoxious draw distance on Gale Racer? It doesn't look playable to me. Hi-Octane looks half finished. Is it any good to play?
Wipeout is rock hard to play but pretty impressive even today. Easy choice.

barryburton May I ask what Oled TV you use? I am also thinking of getting on Oled TV in the middle of the year (maybe). Would be interested in getting an 55 Oled B7 or C7 because they are supposed to work very well with my future OSSC. If the price of the old 2017 drops enough when they new 2018 Gereration of Oleds is available I will maybe get one. So I am very interested how well a Saturn works on the latest OLED TVS Hi there. It is this one, bought in early 2016. HD not 4K. www.lg.com/uk/tvs/lg-55EC930VAs I said before it worked perfectly with the OSSC + Saturn. Plug and play. It also does a very good job with SCART directly to the TV, though not quite as sharp and vivid as the OSSC.

That racing collection is interesting. Have not seen one of those before. Bet you've found some worthwhile oddities along the way. I enjoyed your handful of mini reviews. I doubt Delisoba Deluxe will get ticked off though... Who'd invest £1000+ in a single CD?
I'd have gone for PS1 if I wanted a big racing collection. Incredible choice of racers on that console.

Can it play Japanese games, without the Action Replay?
Has it got a mod chip? A faulty one can cause that sort of problem.
If you've swapped the laser and tested various settings then that doesn't sound like the problem. Could be something to do with the cartridge slot or the AR cartridge.

Is that Shinrei Taromaru you're referring to? Shieryu is a vert shooter and it's a very good one. Looks ace, plays great and the music is top notch... And can I add, taromaru is not worth it, I bought it a few months back and it's a shelf trophy, which annoys me. The weapon system is pants IMO. Agreed- an average Shinobi-esque action platformer, with some quirky scenes and moves, elevated to legendary status through a publishing quirk.

Yes you won't need US or PAL capability if you're focussing on fighting games.
In my opinion the ones to start with are Street Fighter Alpha 2 (or Collection) and X-Men vs. Street Fighter. If you don't want/ have a 4MB cart then straight X Men is good too. I like Marvel Super Heroes as well but some find it too easy and basic. Capcom Generations 5 is nice if you want a very retro Street Fighter experience. SFZ 3 is great but expensive and might not be worth the extra unless you are a big fan of the series.
I personally don't enjoy the Sega 3D fighters (Virtua, Vipers, Megamix), find them too floaty and a bit dull to play. I know they are very popular though. Try DoA.

I had the same original problem as Alf.
I have (had) a modchipped machine. It was reading game discs, including original legit discs, as music only. I adjusted and tested all possible settings on the laser pot dial, and also bought and installed a new laser unit.
This didn't work so i just removed the mod chip which solved the problem.
Can't play burned games on it anymore unfortunately, unless I get a new chip fitted or use Pseudo. Not sure I'll bother for the time being.
At least it has a nice new laser unit now.
