Hey, I realise this is slightly de-railing the thread but I had a question that somewhat pertains to this thread. I was wondering how you would go about checking whether or not a scart carries RGB as I have been using a scart cable for several years now assuming it was the best quality output and didn't realise that some scarts do not carry RGB. (Also I'm asking you since it was your article that made me realise!) Honestly, the picture quality alone should make it really obvious. It's either gonna be blurry as shit with questionable color or clear/sharp as shit with awesome color. We're not talking VGA versus HDMI; composite and RGB have huge, visible differences (especially if you're using a modern TV).

I got one of these controllers a while back and it's in immaculate shape, but after using it a bit I was disappointed with how it felt in comparison to my US pad (which is out of action, so I can't really do a direct comparison anymore), especially in regards to the D-pad.
I was considering buying another US pad to be sure, but was assuming that either my original pad had become worn to my liking or that I had finally passed the honeymoon phase with these pads and they really aren't as good as I've always maintained. I was under the impression that these pads were identical throughout their life span, so I thought it was just me.
I don't really have a screwdriver that fits up with those screws well enough to open it reliably, though. The last time I opened up one of my controllers it was a huge pain in the ass.

I think there's something you destroy that opens up part of the wall. I can't remember what exactly, but just keep exploring and killing shit. You definitely don't have to suicide bomb a wall to get through.

I get the "cartridge unsuitable for system" message occasionally using my AR cart. Usually a reboot fixes that, though.
I can't help much beyond that, but I have gotten that message and the cart does still work.

These are the ones I got: www.amazon.com/JVC-Taiyo-Yuden-80min-Silver/dp/B003NYSZUWThey have different discs with different writing surfaces depending on what kind of CD printer you have, but for the quality of the discs themselves, it shouldn't really matter what you get. I think I just went with the cheapest because my burner can't print anything anyway. Zyrobs makes a good point, though. I never run into a situation where certain CD-R brands worked but other ones didn't work at all. I've had lesser quality CDs that had more issues while playing, but it's pretty unlikely you'll see one CD boot and another one fail if the image, burner and software are all the same. You should definitely try an emulator before spending more money. I noticed you said something about having to change filenames in the cue when they were wrong... that sounds odd to me. I've never come across a bin/cue image where I had to mess with the cue file. As long as the two files are in the same directory, you should only have to open the cue in ImgBurn and burn from there. EDIT: I didn't see your last post. Cool, I'm glad you got it working.

Like I said, I only use ImgBurn. I've never felt the need to use anything else 'cause it's always worked for me.
I wouldn't expect you to run into Taiyo Yuden CDs in a store or anything. I haven't seen any here in the US either, I just order them online. The only real problem with them is that you can't really get them in smaller quantities, so you need to buy like 50-100 at a time. They're pretty much the best CD-Rs you can buy, though, so if you can't burn a working copy of a game with those you can definitely rule out the media being the problem.
Do your CD-Rs use a weird color dye or something? It seems like I've heard that black-bottom media and stuff like that won't work on a Saturn. I'd at least try to find a different brand of CD-R if you can.

I use bin/cue images and ImgBurn exclusively and I've never had any problems, regardless of where I got the image from. Iso/mp3 rips are worth avoiding if at all possible. Do you even have any burned games lying around that do run to verify that your modchip works? Maybe try a better CD brand like Taiyo Yuden. Do retail games run?

I never meant to claim that EWJ2 or Shinobi X were run 'n guns, I just meant to say that if the list of traditional run 'n guns was going to be incredibly short (like it is), I'd open the discussion up to any action platformers that involve shooting or projectile tossing.

Nope.
I was actually able to beat Bug Too back in the day, but mostly only due to the sheer amount of time I put into that fucking thing. Bug, on the other hand, I had never played until recently and was just completely unwilling to keep drudging on through the frustration (maybe being armed with a mod-chip these days gives me far less patience than I used to have).
It seems like the original game has even fewer checkpoints than the sequel, in addition to no run button and, from what I recall, no ability to spit (I could be wrong on that). It's pretty much exactly how you described Bug Too: fun at times, but more frustrating than fun.
I'm curious to see what someone would say who's played the first game more than I have, though.

Is this also true with the SNK titles that require the 1 MB cartridge? Recently, I have been reading reviews on the Samurai Shodown 4 port for the Saturn. A lot of people report there is massive slowdown in this game; however, I have seen various videos that appear to showcase the game at varying speeds. Some videos display horrific slowdown, while others appear to move at the Neo Geo's pace. So, with regard to Samurai Shodown 4, I am wondering if people are only seeing the slowdown when playing the game on a U.S. system with an Action Replay 4 in 1 cartridge? If that is true, the solution would be to use an official SNK 1 MB cartridge, but that is obviously problematic for those without a Japanese system. I still don't own Marvel Super Heroes or Samurai Shodown 4 to test this for myself, so it's only speculation. If this is true, it really puts a damper on the effectiveness of the Action Replay cartridge. It seems like slightly earlier SNK releases have issues with the Action Replay while later ones don't (maybe it comes down to which ports were released prior to the 4MB RAM cart being available on the market?). The only game I've personally seen with extra slowdown using the AR is Metal Slug, but I do know that Real Bout Fatal Fury and KoF '96 have garbled graphics when you use it, whereas RBFF Special and KoF '97 are perfectly fine. Like bradcap said, if you want to play SNK games on your Saturn, you really need to find a way to use the 1MB cart on it. I know that can be tough with a non-JP console, but personally, I just installed a modchip and region-patched the disc images I had (I really can't recommend that route enough when some of the best Saturn games can be so god damn expensive).

Actually, I completely agree. Case in point: Elevator Action Returns. Some clearly love it, but it made such a miniscule impact on me that I forgot the damn thing even existed when I made this thread.
I do intend on playing Scud eventually, regardless of others' opinions on it. I was just noting what I'd heard about it.
Wolf Fang looks interesting too. I remember coming across it randomly on Satakore before, but it didn't have any screenshots or videos (I hate when that happens) to tell me what kind of game it was. Watching videos now, it looks kind of like a mix-up between a run 'n gun and a shmup with the forced scrolling.
I'll go ahead and edit my list on the off-chance anyone wants a quick reference for these types of games.

Oh yeah, I burned a copy of that a while back; I forgot. So that expands the list a little, but it's still painfully short for a 2D powerhouse console.

I've been rummaging around for some good run 'n gun-type games in the Saturn library, but my attempts have largely been stymied, so let's toss out "good" and simply opt for any game classifiable as a run 'n gun (2D, side-scrolling, platforming optional). As far as I know, we have:
Assault Suit Leynos 2 Elevator Action Returns Metal Slug Scud Silhouette Mirage (more or less) Wolf Fang (forced scrolling) Wonder 3 - Rooster (again, more or less)
Is that really it? Can anyone expand on this? What if we throw in some action/platformers with shooting elements or other projectile attacks (Earthworm Jim, Shinobi, etc.)?
The Genesis/MD absolutely slays at this genre, and lately it's become my preferred gameplay style, so it's a bummer to see the Saturn get so shafted by comparison.

The game already runs pretty slowly with two players, and I have my doubts about RAM space available for all those sprites. Yeah, I'd rather someone hack it to make use of one of the RAM carts. Now that would be awesome (though likely incredibly difficult). This game would be so much better without the insane slowdown.
