I'm in exactly the same boat, love the JPN cases and artwork and all the games I want (for the most part) are not dependant on language.
I bought a PAL Saturn which I intend to mod, then bought a mint boxed white Saturn from Japan (however I overlooked the 2-3 MONTHS shipping time!) and I may buy a grey JPN one for general use/experimenting.

Welcome! Is that an F430 or 360 in your avatar? I got to drive the F430 around the international circuit at Silverstone last year, good fun.

Funny you say that:
I've had this in my basket past 2 weeks. I'm just waiting on the seller to get a few more items before buying, shipping from Japan/China takes ages. :/

Ignore the PS1 games, was a quick snap. Decent start to my collection, all of the games except for Virtua Fighter came with manual and spine card.

Finally picked up a few games, spent several hours mashing away at Decathlete which has left me wanting Winter Heat as I've never played it.

According to interwebs those MD pads come about a few years after launch and were included with consoles in all regions. Can't say I ever saw one in the UK but thats probably due to not buying a MD after they were introduced.

That is indeed a first party pad but I don't believe they were ever shipped with the console as standard. I think I can name about 5 games where the Megadrive ever used more than 3 buttons

I've owned all the consoles at some point but sold everything a few years back as emulation seemed to be covering everything. Sadly its no alternative to owning physical copies.
Think my biggest mistake was swapping a PC engine with CD add-on and about 25 games for a copy of Jumping Flash and Battle Arena Toshinden on PS1 haha. Back then though no one really knew what a PC engine was so they had no real value. It was all about owning the latest kit.
I think retro stuff has entered a golden era, the latest consoles are a bit stale and I'd rather own the original games over constant remasters or broken games.

To my knowledge the Saturn is the only console to have a 1st party pad with a six-button layout on the face of the pad. For that fact alone I'll always have a hard on for the Saturn joypad.

Sorry to hijack but, Zyrobs, how'd you install the Bios? Do you have any reputable links? BIOS Chip
Like that. Doesn't look like it's straight forwards, I need a new soldering iron before I attempt this one else i'll end up nuking my Saturn before I even play anything on it.

Thanks for the info.
I totally overlooked the region mod, I was talking about a 50/60hz switch. I'll opt for a 4-in-1 for now as I can get one pretty cheap and look into modding the Saturn further once I know how it all fits together.
I did see RGB cables linked (eBay) on another thread in this section so i'll suck it and see with what I've bought and commit to a higher grade cable if needs be.

I've just bought a Saturn and I intend on fitting a flip switch mod the moment it turns up, also picked up a cable listed as RGB SCART but will likely be composite in disguise however it will suffice for now.
Question I have is once I have installed a mod switch and i'm able to play imports, will import RAM carts work or will I need one of those 4-in1 jobbies?
Also if i'm outputting A/V to my TV via RGB does anyone know if audio will pass-through via TOSlink to an AV receiver? This is more for curiosity in advance as i'm wondering if I need to pre-empt the inevitable (it doesn't pass-through) and perhaps invest in a SCART to HDMI "Upscaler" as any inputs via HDMI into my TV happily pass-through to TOSlink.
Also are there any games in particular that don't play nicely on modded PAL systems? I'll likely do some research on this on a case by case basis when looking to buy a game but ya never know these days!

Just a quick Hi!
I've just been baited into buying a Sega Saturn after browsing feebay for a few hours and now I have about 1001 questions rattling around in my head (which will be posted in the appropriate section so I figured I should at least introduce myself first.
I'm not new to the Saturn but it would be around 17 years since I last played one! Sadly I sold off a few gems when I parted with my old Saturn including Dragon Force, Burning Rangers and Shining Force *cry*. So now i'm 17 years wiser and have decided to start collecting up some Sega goodness again, in particular Japanese titles as they just look so much more appealing than the PAL cases/artwork. I'm thinking Akumajō Dracula X and maybe D&D Collection to start but we'll see how it goes.
Anyhoo, i'll leave it at that. You will most likely find me lurking around the forums posting questions or chipping in where I can. See ya!
